Hello there!

My name is Kioshana, and I am the creator of Quiet Hour Critiques.

I began this site as a space to contain my thoughts about the many, many books and papers that I regularly read. For as long as I can remember, I have been a lover of the written word – whether fiction or non. When I began my Ph.D. journey in 2024, one of the things that excited me the most was the opportunity to read for purpose, in the context of academic work that I am undertaking and supporting others in undertaking. However, in addition to my scholarly pursuits, I work full-time as a writer and editor, and I am a wife and mother to three amazing kiddos. As I’m sure you can imagine, my every day schedule doesn’t leave a ton of time to read and write.

That’s where the Quiet Hours come in. Each evening, once the littles are put to bed and everyone else is winding down their day, I take advantage of the stillness of the house to dive into whatever artifact I am reading and evaluating that week. Sometimes its only for an hour, and sometimes I can go on working well into the night. Either way, I find I do my best work during these Quiet Hours.

This blog is an offering of my thoughts, findings, inspiration, and ideas that come from reading over books new and old as they come across my desk. Don’t expect the kind of polished, academic prose you might find in a journal (after all, I am a doctoral scholar – I need those writings to be vetted and published by someone else), but do expect frank, fun, and timely looks at seminal and newly published works in a variety of academic fields (as well as a few that are non-academic, but that speak to me and the work I am working to accomplish).

Welcome, and thank you for joining me on my journey.
